Mrs Eaves Type Specimen Book
Mrs Eaves, designed by Zuzana Licko in 1996, is a typeface rooted in the Baskerville tradition. Licko created it as a thoughtful response to criticisms of Baskerville’s high contrast and perceived perfection. By widening lowercase proportions and reducing the x-height, she softened these contrasts while maintaining balance.
Compared to Baskerville, Licko reduced the curves of the ascender and tail. This makes the font looks neat and fresh. The petite capitals are the unique feature of Mrs. Eaves.
I researched various vintage book designs to draw inspiration for my type specimen. The goal was to preserve the vintage texture while infusing it with qualities that evoke a feminine, elegant, and decorative aesthetic. I also aimed to incorporate a touch of neoclassical sophistication, ensuring the design feels both gentle and refined. This blend of styles seeks to create a timeless yet approachable visual identity that celebrates beauty and grace.
